Some Light, Please…

Thankfully, some much needed good news arrived this week.

DV8, a men’s boutique in London, has become the latest casualty in my never ending onslaught to conquer the world with my illustrative perversions. Mid to late October, they’ll be carrying 22 of my works on blank greeting cards at their SoHo store on Old Compton Street. Favorite pieces like El Diablo, Sneaker Freak, Bootlicker, and many more will be on display and for purchase on the cheap. Tell them I sent you!

A 3rd batch of cards has also made it’s way to Rock Hard in San Francisco, CA and I thank them for their continued belief in bringing my work to you out here on the west coast!

Also, the contract arrived this weekend to seal the deal to become part of the 2nd annual anthology, Best Erotic Comics of 2009, published by Last Gasp out of San Francisco. I’ll be sending the art in and tying up the loose ends to take the story, “‘Dem Bones”, originally published in Hard To Swallow #3, to this new publication.

Weekend Plans and Breaking News

I’m writing this post surfing on the streams of some neighbors WiFi connection.

This weekend is all about settling in to my new digs and there is a lot that I plan on accomplishing. I’ve already had an electrician come out to the house to start on the upgrade that my place will need to run all the gadgets, heating/cooling unit, and set the ground work for future upgrades. He should finish this tomorrow and should be approved next week!

I have to head down to Home Depot and get one of those jumpsuits and a respirator for crawling under the house to wire my place with Cat5 cable for my Playstation 3 and internet connections. I’ll also be installing a cat door as Boo-Boo (her name – I’ve decided) was let out supervised today after I came home and then later again when I was taking out some recycling and trash for tomorrow’s pick up, so I do think she’ll be doing it on her own soon. My fridge/freezer kit arrives tomorrow from Sears which will start my plans for re-doing my kitchen. Next week, the phone company will connect all my pre-wiring up for internet so I don’t have to hijack somebody else’s. And then in two weeks, I should have my new furnace installed in the attic and the cooling unit on the outside wall facing the old lady next door.

Dem BonesToday, I got some great news from Last Gasp. They want to republish the short story, “Dem Bones”, I originally did for my fellow comic fiends who do Hard To Swallow Comix – #3. It is to appear in the pages of Best Erotic Comics of 2009! Hurray!

The Boys

The Boys - Volume OneI recently picked up the incredibly wrong, humorous, foul, perverse, violent and well written first 7 issues of the comic, The Boys, now published by Dynamite Entertainment. In short, I fuckin’ loved it! Sex all over the place – though not always viewed in a very good light – is used to push the story along about a group of people commissioned by the CIA to keep an eye on superheros who aren’t always what their press and image live up to be. The Boys intimidate and even kill superheros to keep them in check.

What I find interesting is the lack of a moral compass in either the heroes or The Boys, as the parallels between either are strikingly similar and as with most things, it just depends which side you are on. With such a dark subject, it’s lightened by poking fun at the whole world of comics fandom and the heroes people have come to love over the history of comics.

The cast of characters are well-rounded and despite their movement in the gray area of what the definition of justice is, I find I really like these characters because of the definite moments of true humanity at it’s best despite the overwhelming worst in so many.

Pick it up – it’s worth the time and money!

Androphilia – A Review

Filed under: Books — Drub @ 12:54 am

Androphilia by Jack MalebracheI took my time wallowing with giddy enthusiasm in the heady passages that have enflamed many reviewers and people who patently missed the point of the book known as Androphilia: A Manifesto. Anything that makes people that upset has to be doing something right as this is usually a signal that it’s making people think uncomfortable things about themselves and the world around them that they’ve lazily accepted.

More importantly, Jack Malebrache’s book is unapologetically about reclaiming sexuality and defining male-to-male sexual relations and ideal relationships that are bound in that and what it all means – selfishly and more importantly without the prejudices and castrating influences of Feminism and The Gay Movement.

It’s a liberating read, empowering each person who reads it (should they not slip into comfortable paths of victimhood) to accept, define, and move past convention. While I can see how people could easily jump to conclusions and call this book a manifesto born out of self-loathing, but then they’d be doing a disservice to the words, message and ultimately themselves.

This would be old thinking – or simply victim mentality. Androphilia has a fresh, often objective, view that asks us to reexamine masculinity, and forces us to challenge ourselves and our place in the world. In reading Androphilia, we are asked to challenge the concept that sexuality isn’t a biologically determined construct, but a chosen one, sighting that we didn’t choose to be straight but chose to find happiness in the company of men. Secondly, we are to face the gay community and give it a big middle finger for dictating how we should behave, what we should believe, and how to assume a “gay identity”. Powerful, powerful stuff which is something I totally understand and respect why these are important steps in taking off the yoke of the Gay Party and cease being victims and nicely dovetails with all the bullshit I personally had umbrage with when the gay bar rags and other gay publications wrote about “gay skinheads” citing me and my friends as something that “doesn’t exist” because we didn’t fit neatly into a cute, inoffensive pink box.

Androphilia confirms and embraces everything that men who are sick of the gay community are out there looking for and everyone should read it, regardless of where our affections lie.

Find the book here, the author’s blog to the right in my blogroll, and when you’ve finished reading Androphilia participate in the forum.
